How to be a Goal-Getter in 2024
Y’all, I love this time of year. It’s all about fresh starts and New Year’s resolutions. You might say “I want to lose all this weight. I want to get healthy. I want to make the most money I’ve ever made in my life.” And all that is great, but dear friend, those are wishes and there’s a difference between a wish and a goal.

A wish is a flamboyant idea of what you want to accomplish. A goal is a destination or a guide on where you’re trying to go. You’ve probably heard of SMART goals. SMART goals are a framework designed to help us set clear and achievable objectives. The acronym SMART stands for:

By applying the SMART criteria to your goals, you can create a more structured and focused approach to goal-setting, making it easier to plan, track progress, and achieve success.
How Can I be a Goal-Getter?
1. Know Your “Why”
I want you to understand the deeper reasons and motivations behind your goals. It involves clarifying the purpose and significance of what you’re trying to achieve. Ask yourself questions like:
- Why is this goal important to me? What is the impact?
- How will achieving this goal contribute to my overall well-being or the well-being of my business?
- What values or principles does this goal align with?

My “whys” are my children, Luke & Evelyn, and my husband, Brian, who does a phenomenal job of supporting our family and being a leader within our home. I want to be the helpmate that he deserves and to leave a lasting legacy for my children.By exploring and understanding your “why,” you can cultivate a more meaningful and purpose-driven approach to goal-setting and achievement. I know with discipline, focus and the right process in place, you can crush those goals!
2. Get Uncomfortable
Your goals should scare you. Yeah, I said it.
Your goals should force you outside of your comfort zone because we know that’s where growth happens. Think about it: if you look back on some of the most challenging times in your life, did you grow when you were playing it safe? Probably not. It’s when you had to face hardships when your back was up against the wall and you felt like there was no way out except for Jesus. That’s when you grew as a person and a business owner.
Your comfort zone is keeping you from achieving those crazy big goals. So suck it up, buttercup! I say jump outside of that comfort zone, take a massive leap and double those numbers!
3. Write Out Your 10 Year Plan
If you’re still struggling to nail down your “why” or identify your goals and how to reach them, it’s time to bust out that good old fashioned 10 year journal prompt. Trust me, it’s a great writing exercise. When you have some quiet time, grab a pen, some paper and your beverage of choice.

Picture this. We jump ahead a decade into the future to the year 2034.
- Who are you?
- What is your “why?”
- What does your business look like?
- What are you selling?
- How many employees do you have?
- How much profit are you reeling in?
- Describe your ideal day at the office (wherever that may be).
- How is your work/life balance?
You’ll find you may have to level-up multiple times or re-engineer your goals, but there’s fun in the challenge! There are no rules when it comes to journaling so let your creativity fly!
Get Back on Track
What happens if your day doesn’t go as planned and your goals get thrown off track? Personally, I lean on my daily disciplines: the things that I do every single day to ground me. Find something that centers you.
For me, it’s time with Jesus, moving my body, hydrating myself, and reading a non-fiction book. This year, I’m also prioritizing rest and recovery. For example, last night, it was close to 10 o’clock and I needed to go to bed. The OLD Jen would have fought to stay up until midnight to complete my tasks and still wake up at 4:30 to head to a boxing sesh. But this NEW Jen is a better version of herself, so she Shut. It. Down. That’s right, I closed my tablet, set it aside and turned off the light. I know my mind and body need rest. The work will get done in the morning when I’m clear-headed.
Remember friend, if you identify your SMART goals, understand your “why” and follow your daily disciplines I promise you’re well on your way taking those dreams and making them reality.
